Behaviour Policy





Blue Coat C.E. Aided Junior School recognises the fundamental importance of a comprehensive, whole school behaviour policy.  We accept that good behaviour plays an essential role in establishing an organised and secure atmosphere, in which staff and children can work together to ensure effective teaching and learning.  

The management of behaviour is a responsibility not only for the Headteacher, but for all staff, teaching and support, parents and Governors and all must make their distinctive contributions.  We acknowledge that the most vital factor in fostering good behaviour is the quality of relationships within school, between all staff and pupils.



At Blue Coat we aim to:

  • Provide a well-ordered, secure and caring environment in which each individual is valued and learning can flourish.

  • Enable children to understand and appreciate the world in which they live and the interdependence of individuals, groups and nations.

  • Promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law,       individual liberty, and mutual respect and understanding of those with different   faiths and beliefs.


As a Church school, we also aim to put a strong emphasis on:

  • Helping children to develop spiritually and morally, finding inspiration in Christian values whilst developing understanding of other religions, ethnic backgrounds and ways of life.



Within the school, staff will ensure that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is embedded into the ethos of the school.

It is the school’s responsibility to create an orderly, well-disciplined, safe and supportive atmosphere which is conducive to effective teaching and learning.           (Article 3 –the best interests of the child.)

Positive relationships are promoted between pupils, and between pupils and staff.  These relationships need to be based on mutual respect.(Article 3 –the best interests of the child.)

Pupils need to be aware of the boundaries of acceptable behaviour.  They need to be rewarded for good behaviour, and receive sanctions for unacceptable behaviour.

          (Article 4-implementation of the Convention.)

          Where sanctions are necessary they will be graduated, and consistently and fairly applied. In the spirit of reconciliation and forgiveness, each new day will provide children with a fresh start.

The arrangements and practices for the management of behaviour are known to pupils, staff and parents.  These include a commitment to prevention and problem solving, rather than a crisis-driven approach.

The expectation of high standards of behaviour does not just apply to pupils in school but is equally applicable to all school activities including off-site and extra-curricular activities.  Good behaviour is also encouraged for pupils in the community.

We seek the active co-operation of parents and the system we use is popular with them.

Blue Coat recognises that pupils, staff, parents and Governors all have rights, needs and responsibilities.



All pupils are entitled to:

  • Opportunities to accept responsibility and develop their independence.

  • Opportunities to develop their self-esteem, through experiencing success.

  • Opportunities to develop self-discipline.

  • Fair and equal treatment.

  • Consistency of approach from all staff – teaching and support staff.

  • Know the codes of conduct, routines and expectations of the school.

  • Praise and reward for positive achievements.

  • Positive role models to emulate.



All staff, including teaching and non-teaching, are entitled to:

  • An orderly and supportive atmosphere in which effective learning and teaching can take place.

  • Active participation in the development and review of the behaviour policy.

  • A system which enables them to be involved in the personal and social development of pupils.

  • Access to training.

  • Advice and support from colleagues, management and Governors.



Parents are entitled to:

  • Be regularly, consistently and actively involved in the social and educational development of their children.

  • Positive involvement in seeking a constructive solution to any situation involving their child which is causing major concern.

  • Information about the school’s behaviour policy.

  • Regular contact with teaching staff.



    The local community is entitled to:

  • Consideration and respect.

  • The co-operation of the school in events which affect the community.

  • Make representations to our school.


Governing Body

Blue Coat School Governing Body:

  • Is kept informed of specific and general developments.

  • Reviews the school’s behaviour policy regularly.

  • Co-operates with and gives support to the pupils and staff.


This policy is subject to monitoring. All staff contribute to discussions on how to review and develop the policy in the light of their experiences and current national trends.  By regular review of all its stakeholders this policy remains up-to-date, effective and coherent.



At Blue Coat Junior School we take Safeguarding very seriously and hope to ensure our pupils flourish and develop both socially and academically in a safe and secure environment.  Through being clear and consistent in our teaching and ensuring the school environment is safe and conducive to learning, we can encourage all pupils to realise their potential with confidence and enthusiasm.


Assertive Discipline Guidance

Blue Coat C.E. Aided Junior School has an Assertive Discipline Programme.  Its purpose is to:

  • Promote high expectations for behaviour.

  • Maintain and encourage high standards of behaviour.

  • Provide a consistent approach to rewarding good behaviour.

  • Provide a consistent approach to responding to unacceptable behaviour.


As a school we have established a very high standard of acceptable behaviour and have clear rules about what is unacceptable.  We have the support of parents, Governors and all school staff in order to achieve this.


We believe that the key to success is clear expectations that are continuously and positively reinforced.  The children know how to make good choices.  Positive and regular encouragement, both at home and at school, is used to motivate the children.


All teaching and support staff give out team points which encourage and reward good behaviour in and around the school.


School Rules


At Blue Coat CE (Aided) Junior School, we always…

1. Do as we are told straight away

2. Keep hands, feet and objects to ourselves

3. Show respect to everyone

4. Walk sensibly and quietly around school

5. Look after our school



  • Consistent verbal praise.

  • Each week team points are added and a trophy is presented to the family team that has gained the most points.  Family Teams accumulate team points each week and the Family Team with the most team points each term earns a prize for their Family Team to enjoy.

  • Family Star Awards are awarded weekly for children

  • Awards are also given to children who display appropriate manners in the dining hall and those who eat healthily, and Lunchtime Supervisors also give awards..

  • Certificates are awarded for 100% attendance on a termly basis. Badges are given for 100% attendance over the year.  Each week the class with the highest attendance receives the Attendance Shield and is allowed an extra session of playtime.

  • Supervisory Assistants choose the year group with the best overall behaviour for extra play time on a Friday Lunchtime.

  • Pupil of the Week Awards are given out for academic progress



The children in our school are trusted with positions of responsibility to show a mutual respect and allow them to rise the challenge of being a responsible citizen with Christian values.  The children are entrusted with various positions of responsibility and these include:

  • Being a dinner prefect

  • Leading Friday celebration assembly

  • Showing prospective parents/teachers/ governors around our school

  • We also have pupils in each year group who are democratically elected to represent their class and these children are on the School Council. We also have; Buddies, SNAG (School Nutrition Action Group), Energy Team and Safety Team.


Consequences of misbehaviour

  • 1st time a child disrupts    Verbal reminder (marked with a V on the tracking sheet)

  • 2nd time a child disrupts    Circle the word ‘warning’

  • 3rd time a child disrupts    Circle 2.  Move the child to a separate area of the classroom with work for 5 minutes.

  • 4th time a child disrupts    Circle 3.  Reflection time in partner class for 5 minutes.

  • 5th time a child disrupts    Circle 4.  Send child to Headteacher.

  • 6th time a child disrupts    Circle 5.  Teacher meets with the HT to discuss the child’s behaviour and parents are informed.

Some children with Special Educational Needs may have their own Individual Behaviour Plan and/or Positive Handling Plan.


Behaviour consequences during Lunchtime

At lunch time the dinner supervisors use a white card system where pupils who are misbehaving are sent to the Headteacher or a member of the Senior Management Team with a white card.  The card has a brief description of what has happened, the name and date on it.  The Headteacher then looks into the incident further talking to those involved and the dinner supervisor before deciding on the appropriate sanction.  All white cards are kept in the behaviour log in the HT office.


Behaviour with immediate consequences:

Within the Assertive Discipline Programme, events may occur which are seen as so serious that they require immediate contact with parents.  These are as follows:

  • Severe aggression towards another pupil or member of staff.

  • Serious damage to school property or theft.

  • The use of consistently foul language.

  • Prejudice related comments.

  • Bringing into school a weapon (such as a knife) or an item that could be used as     a weapon.


The above incidents are investigated and parents are informed immediately and asked to withdraw their children from school.  Consequences for these incidents can mean automatic exclusion, the length depending on the severity of the incident, and parents may be asked to replace items or pay for damage done.  There is an expectation that parents will follow up the school’s actions with a suitable sanction at home.


Outside agencies, such as the Police, or Social care and Health, may be informed.


The decision to exclude a pupil is never taken lightly.  Blue Coat CE Junior School has agreed to follow guidance from the Local Authority.   Where a pupil is given a fixed term exclusion for 6 days or longer, a reciprocal arrangement has been made with Newton Hall Infants’ School to provide suitable full-time educational provision from and including the 6th school day of the exclusion.


In Conclusion

Every member of Blue Coat Junior School is made to feel equally important.  They are encouraged to respect each other as individuals regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, religion, impairment, attainment or background.  Positive attitudes are shown and encouraged. Discussions about the UN Convention on Rights of the Child, rights and responsibilities, sanctions and respect for one another take place on a regular basis during Worship, Family Group time and in the classroom. School and home work together in order to achieve the high standards of behaviour and self-discipline that are expected at Blue Coat.
