Languages

Our MFL curriculum brings our vision, "with God all things are possible," to life by breaking down communication barriers and opening doors to a world of new possibilities. We cultivate wisdom as pupils develop the cognitive skills to decode new languages and gain a deep, respectful understanding of diverse cultures and perspectives. It takes great courage to step out of one’s comfort zone, to embrace the vulnerability of speaking in a foreign tongue, and to persevere through the challenge of new grammar and phonics. This journey of discovery sparks a unique sense of joy, as the wonder of connecting with another person in their own language proves to our children that they are part of a global family where every voice has the potential to be heard.

We believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. It helps them to develop communication skills, including the key skills of speaking and listening, and extends their knowledge of how language works. Learning another language gives children a new perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others.

At Blue Coat we have provided learning opportunities for all children in Years 3 – 6 since 2005. The focus language taught in our school is French.

The children will be given opportunities to:

  • listen carefully and recognise sounds and combinations of sounds which are similar to, or different from, those of English;
  • understand and respond with increasing competence, accuracy and confidence in a range of situations;
  • join in songs, rhymes, raps and stories which enable them to practise the sounds of the language in an enjoyable and non-threatening way;
  • take part in conversations at an appropriate level, reacting to instructions and questions and expressing opinions and feelings;
  • memorise and recite short texts.
